worriedaboutsatan new single and tour0

Written by: Tom Duncalf and Jim Sandford 17 Mar, 2010

Some info on Worried About Satan's new single and tour.

Leeds based two-piece worriedaboutsatan, whose blend of ethereal, glitchy techno and dark, post-rock inspired ambience on their debut album "Arrivals" caught the attention of both the music press (receiving 7.6/10 on Pitchfork and 8/10 on Drowned In Sound)

and discerning music lovers everywhere are back with a new single and a tour taking them all round the UK and even Europe. We caught up with the band to see what they'd been up to since we last spoke, and what their new material has in store.

“We're currently unsigned and won’t be rushing into any new label deals”, says Tom Ragsdale, the production mastermind of the group. “We want to be signed to a label with an electronic focus, but who encourage their artists to experiment - someone like Border Community or Shitkatapult”.

Based on their new material, they shouldn’t have any trouble finding a good home. New single “Heart Monitor”, planned for a limited release in an elegant die-cut sleeve at the end of March, marks an evolution of their sound. The trademark worriedaboutsatan atmospherics, glitchy beats and heavily effected guitar are still there, but there’s also piano and a vocal that wouldn’t sound out of place on one of Sasha’s “Involver” albums added to the mix.

“We wanted to go in a more song-based direction with this track”, says Gavin Miller, who comes up with a lot of the initial ideas and demos for their songs on Ableton and with his guitar and effects pedal setup. The band sent the unfinished track off to Greg Hoepffner from French electronica act Template, and he sent them back a vocal to use, adding a new angle to their sound. The title of the track features as a theme throughout it, with a bass drum sounding like a human heartbeat and bleeps reminiscent of a hospital heart monitor amongst the many other layers.

The band are not currently working on a new album, but are instead taking advantage of their freedom to explore different directions, and are planning on several smaller releases in a variety of styles - some focussing more on their clubby electronic side, and some with more ambient and post-rock influences. “We’re feeling really inspired at the moment”, says Tom, “and we’ve been listening to all sorts - from Gas to Kompakt stuff to Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann”.

They also have a new tour coming up, supporting their good friends Her Name In Calla, organised by their label Denovali Records and taking them as far afield as Berlin, Leipzig and Belgium, showcasing new material and bringing the electronic elements of their sound to the forefront. “We’re really inspired by producers who create albums with a whole variety of styles, but then bang it out live - people like Apparat and Alex Smoke”, says Gavin, “so that’s what we’re hoping to achieve”.

The “Heart Monitor” single is released 29th March, for sale online and at gigs, featuring a remix by Icelandic ambient producer “Her Eyes Like Static” and remix stems for producers to create their own versions, following the success of their “Arrivals: Remixed” album. The band are currently on tour with Her Name is Calla, playing Leeds Holy Trinity Church on 29th March - see their Myspace for more dates, and to listen to the new single.
